Welcome to PPPI Website

Dear colleagues,

In the 80’s and 90’s, Indonesia was known as “a country of the future”. Now, almost 30 years later, the world still considers Indonesia as “a country of the future”. This is good and bad news at the same time. This is good news, since Indonesia has a long list of potential. It has abundant natural resources, young demography, large middle income market, strategic location, and political stability. However, it is also shows that over the last 30 years we haven’t been able to realize those potentials. We fail to step up the global value chain and to be at par with several more developed countries in the region.

The lack of sound public policy is one of Indonesia’s major challenge. Various policies, both at the national and sub-national level, have the lack of clear direction and coherence. They are not designed based on proper process.

This is the reason why Paramadina Public Policy Institute (“PPPI”) exist. Through various studies and policy recommendations we create, we would like to promote sound public policy in Indonesia. Through public discourse we held, we envisage to involve the people and to build the culture of intellectual debate in policy making process.

We understand that Indonesia is unique, so does our approach. We believe in the importance of objectivity, credibility and simplicity in public policy. A good public policy should be objective: it serves the interest of the people. It should be credible: it is designed based on reliable data and thorough analysis. Lastly, it should be simple: it is clear and applicable.

We also understand that public policy involves extensive stake-holders with different perspective and interest. Due to the challenging environment, improper policy often makes situation worse. In this context, policy makers should carefully take into account the indirect and the direct effects as well as the unintended and the intended consequences of policies.

Since the establishment in 2010, PPPI has advised ministries and high level government institutions. PPPI collaborates with various international/national donors, corporations and civil society organizations. It enables us to keep refining our approach, improving our capacity and widening our network. More importantly, it has strengthen our belief on the importance of public policy think-thank in Indonesia, and the difference it can make.

We realize that enabling Indonesia exploring its great potential is a huge undertaking and is a long journey. In this regard, collaboration among institutions and individuals are a key success factor. We, at PPPI, understand this well and invite you or your institution to collaborate in this exciting endeavor.

Best regards,
